Multicultural Counseling

At Manatee Associates of Counseling & Assessment, we believe providing multicultural counseling in Palmetto, FL is some of our most important work. While the field of therapy has been predominated by white men, more women and people of color are now offering therapy, including the members of our team. We know that individuals all view the world from unique perspectives, but we also recognize that being able to find a therapist who shares some of your cultural experiences and views can mean the difference between feeling better and continuing to struggle. Our therapists represent a diverse range of perspectives and world experiences, and they have all received training in multicultural therapy approaches to ensure we are able to provide the best possible care for anyone we work with.

What Does it Mean to Choose a Multicultural Therapist?

The therapy field has, historically, included fewer people of color as professionals, making it more challenging for diverse populations to find therapy offerings with people who will understand their cultural perspectives. For this reason, most counseling and therapy programs now include training in multiculturalism as part of their curricula. In our practice, we have a diverse group of clinicians who have received advanced training that ensures they can offer effective care that meets your unique needs.

Are There Specific Multicultural Issues that May be Incorporated into Counseling?

In many cases, multicultural counseling is about being able to objectively and non-judgmentally listen to and understand the life experiences of the individuals who visit us. However, we know that there are biases and prejudice that can lead to unique issues that members of minority groups may want to talk about during therapy sessions. From systemic racism and prejudices against members of the LGBTQ+ community to ableism and misogyny, understanding the challenges inherit in navigating a world that makes you feel “other” are important aspects of multicultural therapy work.

What Should I Expect During Multicultural Therapy?

First and foremost, what you should expect and will receive when you visit our office for multicultural counseling is understanding. We will not be passing judgement on you or discounting your thoughts and experiences. Instead, your perspective will be validated, and you will receive a therapy plan that is empathetic and non-judgmental. The goal is to provide the necessary sensitivity to make you feel comfortable and able to discuss all of the difficulties you’re facing. Then, we’ll partner with you to develop the coping skills and resilience to navigate everything that life may throw your way.
