Couples Counseling

Romantic partnerships can be some of the most fulfilling and meaningful relationships in our lives, but they can also be difficult to navigate and take work to maintain. If you’re struggling in your relationship, every part of your day can feel more difficult. Whether your once thriving relationship seems to be at a standstill, you’re constantly having the same argument, or you need to repair intimacy, the therapists at Manatee Associates of Counseling & Assessment can help with Palmetto, FL couples counseling sessions.

Will Couples Therapy Really Help?

Some people are lucky enough to have the necessary skills to develop and maintain healthy, lasting relationship bonds. For most of us, there are aspects of relationships where we could stand to improve. From better communication to boundary setting, relationships should be a safe place where we can ask for and receive the support we need to feel satisfied – and where we provide that for someone else. If a relationship is leaving you and your partner feeling unhappy or unfulfilled, couples therapy can help you get back on track and enjoy a new, deeper level of connection.

Why Should We Try Couples Counseling?

There are many reasons why couples visit our practice for relationship therapy. In most cases, these reasons fall into one of three categories: prevention and foundation work (premarital counseling), maintenance and growth, or repair. While creating a solid foundation and maintaining healthy, growing relationships are really important, the majority of people visit us when there is a big problem that the partners are unable to solve. Some of the concerns that bring couples into our office include:

  • Betrayal and infidelity
  • Chronic fighting (especially having the same fight without resolution)
  • Unequal balance within family (working too much, one parent is relied on too heavily as the caregiver for kids, etc.)
  • Difficulty blending families
  • Navigating divorce, especially with kids
  • Problems within the extend family (the dreaded in laws)
  • Mental and physical health concerns (addiction, chronic illness, anxiety)
  • Struggles with intimacy, including emotional connection as well as issues with sex, pornography, or other physical intimacy struggles

What Should I Expect During Couples Therapy?

During couples therapy sessions, we will talk through the areas of concern that brought you to the office and work to develop the skills to repair damage, renew intimacy bonds, and generally restore the love you once felt for your partner. We will usually begin with a session together. Then, you will meet individually with your counselor to discuss your individual goals or concerns. Then, we’ll come back together and make a plan for your time in couples therapy with the goal of creating a solid and satisfying partnership.
